Dame Elisabeth Frink
English sculptor and printmaker
1930-1993
Married 3 times
In her obituary three essential themes
 in her work were mentioned:
1. The nature of Man
2. The 'horseness' of horses
3. Th divine in human form

The Walking Madonna
1981
was first a temporary statue
put aside the cathedral with her back towards it.
The sculpture was made permanent,
positioned like she ran away from religion.
Elisabeth Frink
often put concepts of pain and grief
in her work, and I wonder if this
was meant to be a self portrait.

She caught the grace of walking,
but when I saw the face,
in the shade, black,
it scared the hell out of me.
"Madonna" is absolutely not the word
I would have chosen.

It's the main entry to Cathedral Close.

It's one of the 4 original gates.

In the 19th century a fifth gate was added
to create access to Bishop Wordsworth's School
inside the cathedral Close.

Behind the shops the church of St. Thomas.
The former building was already there in 1219
and the builders of the Cathedral used to pray there.

At Butcher Row, corner Minster Street
also called: Poultry Cross.

There's a market at this site since 1227.
This building was designed to provide shelter to traders.
It dates back to the 15th century.
The stone flying buttresses were added in 1852.

In the old times there were many of these shelters in the area.
