Paul worked in this area and took us today
to the west of Middle Wallop.
This is a bad photo,
as the sculpture took me by surprise when we drove by.
Before, it took the visitors of the summer solstice celebrations
of 2010 by surprise when they arrived at Stonehenge.
After the event it was dismantled and moved to the current site
just off the A303 outside the Holiday Inn
at Solstice Park near Amesbury.
Quite a job, as the sculpture is 25 ft high and
weights a huge seven tons!
It was created by local sculptors
Andrew Rawlings and Michelle Topps
with help from druids and the local community.
It took them nine months and they didn't use any design.
Thousands of randomly cut steel pieces were welded on to a
super-sized steel frame.
It depicts a man on his knees in praise of the sun.
The husband and wife team tried to sell the sculpture several times,
and made it available for renting for festivals and events.
Amesbury Ancestor is described as
the gatekeeper at the threshold of the
7500 year old ancient settlement of Amesbury,
the home of Stonehenge.

Woodhenge is a Neolithic timber monument
built in about 2500 BC,
around the same time as Stonehenge,
and only 2 miles away to the North-East.
It was discovered in aerial photos in 1925.
Dark concentric circles in the fields suggested
something was there.
The site was excavated in 1926-7 by
Ben and Maud Cunnington.
They found six concentric ovals of standing posts,
surrounded by a bank and ditch,

They marked the positions of the wooden posts
with concrete pillars.

Stonehenge
Then we wanted to visit Stonehenge.
But Stonehenge,
given for free by the ancestors,
was commercialized !
5 pounds parking, and 20 pounds a person!
So we went away...
just like others.
The road took us within sight.
